This got us wondering, could we
give charities some of the same access?

How Waffle are putting conversations back into communities and subsidized by Belgian desserts
Matthew Smith
CEO, Co-Founder of The Community Waffle House CIC

Over three years of operating we have gone from a team of 5 staff and 5 volunteers to 34 staff and 42 volunteers

Community is in Mattā€™s veins. When he was 4, he attended the weekly "Cowley Club" (named after our road) hosted by his Mum in their tiny house for young girls in our neighbourhood that needed a role model.

Later, after studying languages and literature at university and then living abroad, Matt developed a fascination for how language influences culture and community. This passion found an initial corporate home in marketing but he was itching for an opportunity to build a Cowley Club of my own.

In 2018, Matt and two friends left our jobs to set up 'Waffle' - a non-profit Community Waffle House driven by a passion for putting conversations back into communities and subsidized by Belgian desserts.

They have since expanded into a nearby town and working with the NHS have set up a Waffle in a local community hospital.

How Choose Love has supported 5 million people and raised $100m in just 7 years
Josie Naughton
CEO and Co-Founder at Choose Love

Choose Love started as nothing more than a group of friends with a plan. In 2015, absolutely devastated by scenes of thousands of people forced to live in terrible conditions in the Calais refugee camp in northern France, Josie knew she had to do something. Josie studied Anthropology but later decided to pursue a career in the music industry. This career move would see her working with the band Coldplay until the ā€˜refugee crisisā€™ in Europe in 2015.

Using her experience and contacts in the music industry, she rallied together friends with the hashtag #HelpCalais. Within a week, they had raised over Ā£50,000 and were soon receiving thousands of donated items every day- Choose Love was born. Josie has gone on to lead the growth of Choose Love as its CEO and the organisation has now supported almost 5 million people via partnering with almost 400 organisations in 33 countries and raising over $100 million.

Josie is a leading advocate for refugee rights in the UK and is seen as a thought leader across the sector, sheā€™s been named as one of Bill and Melinda Gates ā€˜Global Goalkeepersā€™ and one of the Evening Standard's Progress 1000 ā€œChangemakersā€. She has spoken at events alongside Bill Gates and Barack Obama.
